You’re innocent. You’ve got nothing to hide. So why not just tell the police your side of the story and clear things up?
Because it doesn’t work like that.
When the police want to talk to you, it’s not a casual conversation. It’s an interrogation. Even if they’re polite, even if they say you’re not under arrest, even if they say they just want to “get your perspective,” you are not on equal footing. They are trained professionals gathering evidence, and what you say can easily be misunderstood, misquoted, or used against you later—sometimes in ways you never expected.
And once it’s said, it’s said. You can’t un-ring that bell.
Innocent People Get Caught Up All the Time
You’d be surprised how often people end up in legal trouble not because of what they did, but because of what they said. They gave a statement thinking it would help. They admitted to being in the area, or knowing the person involved, or having a drink that night—and suddenly they’re a focus of the investigation when they weren't before.
Police don’t always have the full picture. If they think they do, they may twist what you say to fit the version they’ve already decided on. And once you're part of that version, digging your way out can be a lot harder than preventing it in the first place.
You Have the Right to Stay Silent—Use It
There’s nothing shady about staying silent and asking for a lawyer. In fact, it’s smart. It means you understand the stakes. The right to remain silent exists to protect everyone—not just the guilty—and it’s often the most important legal protection you have. Heck, our Founding Fathers refused to adopt the Constitution until the right to not talk to the government was protected by the Fifth Amendment. So it's kind of a big deal.
Talking to the police without a lawyer doesn’t make you look cooperative. It makes you vulnerable.
