Caught with a gun in Mississippi?

Mississippi has a reputation as a gun-friendly state—and in many ways, that’s true. Concealed carry is allowed in most places, and you don't even have to have a permit. But don’t let that fool you into thinking you can carry a firearm just because you’re not causing trouble.

Gun charges in Mississippi are real, and they’re serious. The most common one? Felon in possession of a firearm. If you’ve ever been convicted of a felony—even one from years ago—you’re not allowed to have a gun, period. Not in your car, not in your house, not on your hip. And if you’re caught with one, it’s a felony all over again.

Even if you’ve never been convicted of a felony, other restrictions still apply. You can’t carry a gun into certain places like schools, courthouses, and polling places unless you have an enhanced carry permit. You also can’t have a firearm if you’re under a restraining order for domestic violence or have a history of certain mental health issues. And if you happen to mistakenly take your firearm with you into the airport when trying to catch a flight? That's against the law, too.

If you’re charged federally, that’s a whole different level. Federal gun charges can mean mandatory minimum prison time—and there’s no parole in federal court.
